Tonkin Materials Testing Limited is a family owned business offering an independent service for the sampling, site and laboratory testing of asphalt, aggregates and soils.  The business was started in 1985 by Greg Tonkin offering a service to monitor the compaction of cement, lime and bitumen bound materials and soils using a nuclear density gauge.  Other site based testing of materials and workmanship were also undertaken and materials and soil samples were mainly submitted to established laboratories for testing.  In 1988, Greg changed the trading name from “Greg Tonkin Nuclear Density Testing Service” to “Tonkin Materials Testing” to reflect the change from the original primary activity of nuclear density testing by an individual to general materials testing but retained the “Tonkin” identity that was established in the field of materials testing in the construction industry. 

Our schedule of accredited sampling and testing concentrates on tests relating to compaction of earthworks and pavements and is complimented by moisture content, binder content and particle size distribution tests.

We have a number of trailer mounted coring rigs that are used primarily for sampling of concrete and asphalt pavement materials but coring for other purposes is also carried out such as barrier posts, lamp columns, snow markers, bollards etc.  Coring rigs are available for hire either on their own or with an operator.  Please contact us for details.
